School Streets

Overview

We’ve introduced School Streets at schools to create safer, healthier streets for children and families.

These zones:

  • limit vehicle traffic outside school gates during drop-off and pick-up times
  • help to reduce road danger
  • support active travel, such as walking, cycling and using public transport
  • improve air quality

You can read more about our Streets for People strategy.

Restrictions

During the restricted hours, motor vehicles (except those with exemptions) are not allowed to enter the School Street zone. The restrictions apply during term time only, at morning arrival and afternoon pick-up times.

Exceptions are that:

  • residents and businesses within the zone can apply for a free exemption
  • emergency services and blue badge holders are not affected
  • vehicles already parked within the zone can leave at any time

We aim to introduce a School Street or a safety measure at every school in the borough.
