Southwark Council in collaboration with Get It Done has unveiled three new murals along Rye Lane in Peckham. The murals were designed by three Peckham-based artists and developed in collaboration with over 20 local community organisations.
The artists are:
- Valeria Salinas Toro
- Regan Gilflin
- Nina Grazette
The artworks serve as an homage to Peckham and its rich history, focusing on themes of community diversity, food and culture and music.
Cllr Portia Mwangangye, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Parks & Young People said:
“These murals are a fantastic addition to Southwark and the culture, community and character of the local Peckham area.
“The work and thought that has gone into their creation is testament to the artists and the passion that people have for their communities which are such an important part of people’s lives.
“The way that Peckham’s history and achievements are portrayed and preserved in the themes of the artwork is something we can all recognise and take pride in.”
Demand for locally commissioned murals has long been high, with Girls About Peckham calling for them as early as 2021. The council convened a Community Steering Panel in 2024, which brought together representatives from across the local area.
In November 2024, the shortlisted artist proposals were exhibited outside Peckhamplex on Rye Lane and more than 1,000 votes were cast to select the winning designs. Each mural was developed through community engagement and co-design workshops; the final works were produced in collaboration with the London School of Muralism, Artmongers, Puck Studios, alongside local volunteers.
