Southwark recognised as one of the UK’s best councils for climate action

Climate change

Climate Emergency UK has released its latest climate scorecards, which rank councils across the UK on the work they are delivering to tackle the climate emergency.

Southwark Council improved its score by 14% and moved up to third place for all single tier authorities across the UK – just 3 percentage points off the number one ranked council. Amongst its strong score across a number of areas, it was notably awarded a gold star in planning and land use, and collaboration and engagement.

Councillor John Batteson, Cabinet Member for Climate Emergency, Jobs & Business said “We’re delighted to see the hard work at Southwark being recognised. Right across the council, from planning and transport to governance and finance we’re taking a whole council approach to tackling the climate emergency, and this independent scorecard ranking shows the progress we are making. We also made a significant improvement in buildings and heating since the last scorecard assessment, which has been a particular focus given this areas contribution to emissions in the borough.

We recognise that we still have a monumental task in front of us, and the only scorecard that matters is how we bring down carbon emissions using the limited resources we have. We’re seeing progress already, but we will be accelerating this even more through upcoming projects that will decarbonise our five largest leisure centres, and a new programme of community-led projects that will increase renewable energy and tackle fuel poverty.”
