Southwark and Now Foster partner up to support children in care

Southwark Council has partnered with Now Foster to launch the Weekenders Programme, an innovative initiative offering weekend fostering placements for children and young people in care.

This new approach matches ‘Weekenders’ with care-experienced young people, providing supportive relationships that help develop skills and confidence.

Southwark is among the first UK local authorities to introduce this programme, following a successful 2024 London pilot that attracted over 400 interested volunteers.

Designed by social work professionals, experienced carers, and care-experienced individuals, the initiative aims to enhance the well-being and futures of young people in care. Southwark has a strong track record of supporting young people in care and has been recognised by Ofsted for its dedication to improving outcomes.

This partnership with Now Foster builds on that success. On BCC Radio 4, Now Foster’s CEO, Sara Fernandez fell into the Weekender relationship by ‘accident’ over ten years ago.

Cllr Jasmine Ali, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Children, Education & Refugees, said: “We’re proud to be one of the first councils in the UK to launch the Weekenders Programme. This inspiring initiative offers young people in our care the chance to build lasting, supportive relationships while gaining confidence and life skills. It’s a flexible approach to fostering that puts children’s needs first and we’re excited to see the impact it will have here in Southwark.”

Sara Fernandez, CEO of Now Foster also added: “Weekenders offers a flexible, meaningful way to make a real difference. We’re excited to partner with Southwark to reimagine fostering.”
