Southwark residents will benefit from a wide range of neighbourhood improvements thanks to the approval this week of over £4m in additional funding from developers.

This is the third wave of Neighbourhood Community Investment Levy (CIL) funding this year, taking the total allocated in 2025 to around £15m.

Developers building in Southwark must pay CIL funds to the council to offset the impacts of new developments, paying towards infrastructure and improved facilities in Southwark neighbourhoods.

Projects funded in this round of CIL include:

  • Over £1.4m to improve Albion Brimmington, Cossall, Hawkstone, Rockingham, Slippers Place, Tabard Estates across the borough, including through playground upgrades, security works, tree and garden planting, solar panels and deep cleans.
  • £506,522 for refurbishment of the Salmon Youth Centre.
  • £150,000 to Bermondsey Blue BID for the arch at the Blue Market.
  • £105,817 to create an affordable workspace in Blackfriars Settlement for voluntary and community organisations.
  • £578,437 of investment to deliver ‘Streets for People’ highways improvements in Dulwich including on Lordship Lane and Half Moon Lane.
  • £33,360 to replace lights at Theatre Peckham and £88,164 for refurbishment of London Bubble Theatre

Cllr Helen Dennis, Cabinet Member for New Homes & Sustainable Development, said:

“It’s important that developers allowed to build in Southwark contribute to the neighbourhoods they’re working in.

“These funds, generated through Southwark Council planning policy, are making possible a wide range of much-needed repairs, enhancements, and new facilities that might not otherwise have been delivered. In particular, we are using this funding to improve our council estates, investing in TRA halls, environmental improvements and security measures to deliver on our commitment to be a good landlord.

“Southwark residents will also benefit from better arts and leisure spaces, cleaner and more secure environments, safer and active travel routes and much more.”
