This year’s GCSE results paint a positive picture for Southwark schools, with provisional figures showing strong improvements in performance across all key measures.
According to Ofqual (the regulator of qualifications, exams and assessments in England), this year’s GCSE results nationally are stable, with outcomes showing only minimal variation from previous years.
This week’s provisional results for Southwark show that 75.8% of pupils achieved grade 9 to 4 in English and maths – an improvement of 2.9 percentage points from 72.9% last year.
Early local analysis also shows strong performance for the English Baccalaureate with 45.5% of achieving a standard pass (an improvement of 3.2 percentage points from last year) and 35.1% of pupils achieved a strong pass in the English Baccalaureate.
Several schools in the borough recorded particularly strong year-on-year improvements, with more than half showing good progress across multiple measures.
Cllr Jasmine Ali, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Children, Education and Refugees, said: “Our students have once again exceeded expectations, with early results showing improvements across the board. This is a true testament to their hard work and dedication, and I couldn’t be prouder. We know success takes a whole community, so I also want to thank our great parents and carers, our fantastic teachers and school staff, for the vital role they have played in delivering these results.
“These results, coupled with last week’s excellent A-level outcomes, show that Southwark schools are among the best in the country. They transform lives and give our young people the best possible start. We are determined to build on this success and continue investing in our schools every step of the way.
“Whether you’re moving on to further study, training or work, we are here to support you and we are excited to see all that you will achieve next.”
