Community views sought to help make London Bridge greener and safer

Streets for People

People living in the London Bridge area are being asked for their views on making local streets cleaner, greener and safer.

Local residents have already told the council that they want more trees and green space, more accessible pavements, less traffic, better lighting, traffic calming, segregated cycling, cycle hangars and pedestrian crossings.

Responding to this feedback, Southwark Council is setting out some ideas for the local community to comment on.

Cllr James McAsh, Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for Clean Air, Streets and Waste, said: “We know people in the London Bridge area mainly walk, wheel, cycle and use public transport to get where they need to go. Residents tell us they want better pavements, crossings and junctions, new trees, more green spaces and better lighting.

“Based on this feedback, through Streets for People, we are transforming our streets and communities, discouraging through-traffic from using residential streets and freeing up more space for walking, cycling and public transport – as well as more space for our residents to get together to socialise and play.

“In the London Bridge area we have already planted more trees and greenery as well as putting in 13 new cycle hangars which accommodate 78 bikes. But we plan to do much more, and in response to local feedback we’ve set out some initial ideas. We want to work with the community in the London Bridge area to develop them further.”

The online survey can be found via the council’s website

Local people are also being encouraged to register for events happening over the next month, where they can share further ideas and challenges they experience in their area. Events include a guided walk, cycle and workshops, and anyone can register to attend online at http://www.southwark.gov.uk/London-Bridge-area

Ideas gathered during the consultation will help the council develop plans for consultation in the coming months.

Locals and visitors alike shop and eat at thriving businesses across the area, including popular high streets like Bermondsey Street.

The council ran the borough’s largest ever consultation in 2023/24, asking residents what they wanted their streets to look like. There were more than 9,000 responses with residents saying they want more trees and green space, more accessible pavements, less traffic, better lighting, traffic calming, segregated cycling, cycle hangars and pedestrian crossings.

73% said they were concerned about the effects of climate change and 72% were worried about the impact of poor air quality on children.
