Celebrations as residents move into new council homes in Camberwell

Lomond Grove

Local people have celebrated the opening of 22 new council homes at Lomond Grove in Camberwell, the latest development in Southwark Council’s ambitious council housing programme.

As well as the new council homes, Lomond Grove residents also enjoy a shared communal garden, a new pocket park, green areas and tree planting around the estate, as well as a newly renovated playground which provides a boost to the surrounding area.

The new homes have been sustainably designed and use air source heat pumps to provide clean, green energy.

The development is named Milton Gayle Court, after the much-loved tennis coach from south London who passed away in 2021.

Mr Abayommy Olajumoke recently moved into Lomond Grove with his family.

Mr Olajumoke said: “We’re really pleased with our new home. It’s spacious, we have our own garden, and it’s a big improvement on where we were living before. There is enough space for our two children now and our lives are much improved since we have moved”.

Cllr Helen Dennis, Cabinet Member for New Homes and Sustainable Development, said: “I was delighted to meet the new residents of Lomond Grove and see these fantastic new homes now they are finished.

“Every new council home built is a real asset for our community providing stability and security for generations to come.

“It’s particularly good to see such a well-designed development with real care and attention given to tree planting and greening as well as the new homes themselves.”

Southwark Council is one of the largest local authority home builders in the country, with over 3,000 new council homes either built or currently under construction across the borough.

Southwark Council is campaigning to save the future of England’s council housing, and has formed a coalition of over 100 other councils to back a bold new national investment programme to provide long-term financial stability for council homes.
