Southwark comes together in support of Ukraine

16 March 2022

This week, the government announced some details of the Homes for Ukraine scheme. The council is holding an online meeting on 22 March (details below) to provide more information for residents.

Councillor Alice Macdonald, cabinet member for equalities, neighbourhoods and leisure, said “Southwark has a long and proud history of welcoming and supporting refugees and asylum seekers seeking safety and sanctuary. The current war in Ukraine has led to the biggest refugee crisis in Europe since World War II. It is essential that we come together as a community to provide humanitarian assistance to Ukrainian refugees over the coming weeks and months. Alongside this growing crisis, it is also important to provide support and assistance to other refugees and asylum seekers who have been forced to leave their homes and seek sanctuary in our borough.”

Residents wishing to register for the Homes for Ukraine scheme, if they know someone they want to support, can visit the government website. If they do not have a named person or wish to support in other ways, organisations like the Sanctuary Foundation  and Ukraine Now are collecting expressions of interest.
