Southwark Council’s plans to build 44 new council homes at Lindley Estate have been granted planning permission. Lindley Estate sits between Commercial Way and Peckham Park Road in the Old Kent Road ward in Southwark.

The new development will provide 44 new council homes to be let at council rent levels as well as a new landscaped courtyard. The development will be an L-shaped, part five-storey block with a mix of flat types and sizes, including one, two and three-bedroom flats, two four-bedroom houses and a wheelchair unit.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, Cabinet Member for Council Homes and Homelessness, said, “It’s fantastic news that this development now has planning permission and will go ahead. This block will provide new council homes in an area where there is a high level of need for affordable housing, meaning that local people will be able to stay close to friends, family and the services they already use”.

In line with Southwark Council’s local lettings policy, at least 50% of the new homes will be offered to local tenants in housing need living in the local area. The remaining homes will be allocated to others on Southwark’s wider housing register. The council recently held a consultation to update the local lettings policy so that 100% of new council homes will be offered to local tenants. Cabinet are due to review the outcome of the consultation and will make a decision on whether to update the policy in 2022.

Works are expected to start on site at Lindley Estate in spring 2022 and the development is expected to be completed in spring 2024.
