January re-opening of schools delayed in Southwark

4 January 2021

The government announced on 30 December 2020 that the start of the new school term would be delayed for most children in Southwark along with many other London boroughs.

Primary schools will not reopen this week as planned for most children, with the exception of vulnerable children and children of key workers.

Secondary schools and colleges will still have a staggered return but with one week’s delay, providing face-to-face education for exam year groups from 11 January and the planned return of all students on 18 January.

The council’s five nursery schools (Kintore Way Nursery School, The Grove Nursery School, Dulwich Wood Nursery School, Ann Bernadt Nursery School and Nell Gwynn Nursery) will follow the guidance that has been provided for primary schools, and also only reopen for vulnerable children and children of key workers this week. The council will work with headteachers to re-open our nursery schools for all children as soon as the conditions enable that to happen safely, and we apologise for the inconvenience caused to families.

Southwark schools have been working hard since the announcement, preparing to deliver remote learning as soon as they possibly can, whilst also ensuring they remain open for vulnerable children and for children of key workers.

Our schools have worked extremely hard throughout this pandemic to prioritise our children’s education, and the council will support them through this next phase. As ever the council and our schools are grateful for parents’ patience.
