A message to residents from the leader of Southwark Council as new national restrictions begin on Thursday

As a new lockdown approaches, Southwark Council’s leader is urging residents to stay home to stay safe.

The new national restrictions begin on 5 November, a time when traditionally people gather to watch the fireworks together, but with most displays cancelled nationwide, this year it’s important to remember why.

Cases of Covid-19 are on the increase across the country and the leader of Southwark Council Cllr Kieron Williams is reminding residents that this year they need to stay at home: “It’s really important that we follow the rules at this time of year - especially when the NHS is already coping with the flu season.”

The impact of the new guidelines, which include the closure again of non-essential businesses, bars, restaurants, places for leisure and worship, will be hard to take, especially for those whose livelihoods depend on them. The council has wide-ranging support in place to support vulnerable people, those facing hardship, and for small businesses, which are the lifeblood of Southwark.

Cllr Williams continued: “I know how worried many residents will be about these restrictions. Some will be worried about the financial impact on their families, while others will fear loneliness and isolation. I can’t pretend it will be easy, but I can promise you that the council will do everything we can to support all our residents through this challenging time.

“I would also ask that everyone who can, looks out for their neighbours and offers support, just like we all did in the first lockdown. In the spring, the outpouring of community spirit in our borough was incredible and humbling, and I know we will all look out for each other again.”

This new national restrictions will take us close to Christmas, but it is hoped that with the great efforts to stay safe and follow the rules that the borough’s residents are capable of, we will see the restrictions lifted by the Government in time for the Christmas period.
