Come together to help tackle Southwark’s Climate Emergency

Southwark Council is inviting everybody who lives in the borough to come together, to chart a path towards a more sustainable and environmentally sound future. Southwark residents are all invited to the very first, community led, Empowering Communities annual conference, at William Booth College, on 21 March.

This event will tackle the Climate Emergency head on, with the views and ideas of those gathered informing the council’s Climate Emergency Strategy, which will launch this summer.

The event is the first borough wide annual conference from the council’s new Empowering Communities Programmes.

The Empowering Communities programme aims to put local people and the issues that are important to them at the heart of everything it does.

Community Champions and councillors help to coordinate and organise four ward meetings and two multi-ward meetings a year, for people in their area. These meetings help people get to know their neighbours, and identify priorities for their local area together, and, where appropriate, apply for council funding to help address local issues.

People who live in Southwark are very welcome to attend our first annual conference and work alongside the council and the people of the borough, to see what we can all do to tackle the Climate Emergency, here in Southwark.

Cllr Richard Livingstone, Cabinet Member for Environment, Transport and the Climate Emergency, said: “I am glad to see our Climate Emergency plans gathering pace and this conference promises to help shape our activities moving forward.

“This conference is essential: it will bring together people and communities throughout the borough, to help shape our plan for a greener, more sustainable and carbon neutral future.

“We’ve booked a large venue, but space is limited and we’re expecting lots of interest, so do register for a place as soon as you can, to avoid disappointment: southwark.gov.uk/climateconference
