First Southwark junior parkrun comes to Burgess Park

21 March 2019

Hot on the heels of the success of adult parkruns held across four parks in Southwark, Sunday 24 March will see the official launch of the first junior parkrun in Burgess Park.

The 2k run is open to all children from four to fourteen years of age and like the adult version, the run is free and easy to join in. Participants can choose to walk, jog, run or volunteer their time to be involved. No runner will be last or left behind as there is always a marshal positioned at the back who supports each participant over the finish line.

Dulwich Park, Peckham Rye Park, Southwark Park and Burgess Park currently host regular adult parkruns that attract between 200-400 runners with an additional 15-20 volunteers who give up their time each week to marshal the events.

Parkrun is a rapidly expanding social enterprise that oversees the organisation of community led, free, weekly 5km timed runs. The parkruns in Southwark are supported by Southwark Council and are delivered by community groups with the junior parkrun jointly funded by Southwark Council and Creation Trust.

Cllr Rebecca Lury, cabinet member for culture, leisure, equalities and communities said: “The great thing about parkrun is that everyone is welcome, regardless of ability or experience level. It’s the ideal way to get active and enjoy the outdoors without the worry of where you place. For the first time in Southwark,  children will be able to get involved with their own junior parkrun. I hope that many of you will be donning your trainers and taking part in the inaugural run!”
