The tenth anniversary of the Lakanal fire

3 July 2019

On the tenth anniversary of the Lakanal fire on the Sceaux Garden Estate in Southwark, members of the community, council staff and local councillors will gather at a service of remembrance in memory of the three women and three children who tragically lost their lives on 3 July 2009.

Cllr Peter John, Leader of Southwark Council, said: “The Lakanal fire was a terrible tragedy. The council at the time, along with others, was at fault and we are deeply sorry for the six precious lives that were lost. Since then we have made many changes to our fire safety programme to help prevent a tragedy of this sort happening again, spending £124 million on fire safety works. The 3 July will be a sombre day in our borough, as we remember the terrible events of that summer’s day. Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those who died, and the community that has worked so hard to recover following the fire.”
