Southwark Council is one of the first local authorities to be signed up to the Mayor of London’s Good Work Standard scheme.

The Mayor of London has officially launched his Good Work Standard – part of his commitment to making London the best city in the world to work. The Good Work Standard sets the benchmark for the best employment standards and helps employers contribute to a fairer and more inclusive London economy.

This means the economy works for all Londoners and more Londoners can access good jobs, in workplaces that support their health and wellbeing.

Cllr Kieron Williams, Cabinet Member for Housing and Modernisation, said: “We’re delighted to be one of the first local councils to be accredited under the Mayor’s new Good Work Standard.

“We’ve invested in our workforce because the evidence is clear, looking after your staff is vital for their wellbeing, and vital in delivering great services too.  I hope many more Southwark employers will sign up to the standard, so they can reap the benefits for their staff and businesses too.”

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, Cabinet Member for Jobs, Business and Innovations, added: “We’re supporting local businesses to raise standards of employment and help make Southwark a Full Employment borough. We want to give people opportunities to get into work and training.

“This month we confirmed we will be creating 500 paid internships places for young people from lower economic backgrounds, and 100 of these will be with Southwark Council. We’ve been recognised as a Top 100 employer for apprenticeships and encourage local businesses to take on apprentices and get accredited with our Apprenticeship Standard.”

The council also jointly launched the local care leavers covenant with Kings College, promoting opportunities for care leavers as part of our commitment to our role as corporate parent.
