Southwark children put their best foot forward for Daily Mile Day

8 July 2019

Whether they lined up on the playground, park or pitch, school children up and down the borough have taken part in the first ever Daily Mile Day.

The Daily Mile Day has seen primary school children across the capital take part in a London record attempt with schools all doing the mile run at the same time.

The Daily Mile has been adopted by schools around Southwark as an easy way to get children to be more active every day by making exercise social, fun and inclusive.

Latest figures show that approximately one in four children in Southwark in Year 6 are obese and initiatives like the Daily Mile is a key way to increase activity levels in young people around the borough.

Children aged 5-18 are recommended to do at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day – this should range from moderate activity, such as cycling and playground activities, to vigorous activity, such as running and tennis.

Cllr Jasmine Ali, cabinet member for children, schools and adult social care, joined pupils from Saint Joseph's Catholic Primary School in Southwark Park to take part in the run.

Cllr Ali said: “The Daily Mile is a fantastic initiative that has really taken off around the country and also here in Southwark.  It has been a pleasure to see the children out in the sunshine enjoying themselves all while doing something that is good for their health.  I would wholeheartedly encourage all schools in Southwark who have not yet signed up to the Daily Mile to do so, it’s an easy way to get children more active and have some fun at the same time!”
