Calling all young artists-Southwark Public Health needs you

21 January 2019

Southwark Council Public Health team is calling on all budding artists in the borough to help design the front cover of its Annual Public Health Report (APHR).

The APHR is an opportunity for the Public Health team to share important health updates with other health professionals and also with local residents.

Southwark recently became the first council in England to set new 100 percent treatment rate by 2020 for all children with a diagnosed mental health condition and following on from this the APHR for 2018 will focus on the mental wellbeing of young people in Southwark.

The aim of this competition is to encourage young people to think about what mental wellbeing means to them. There are no wrong answers and this can differ from person to person.

The winning artist will not only have their work appear on the front cover of the APHR, seen by around 700 health professionals and residents, they will also receive £200 of Amazon vouchers. Second and third place designs will also be awarded £50 worth of vouchers each. All art pieces submitted to this competition will be featured in a temporary exhibition at a local venue to mark the launch of the APHR later this year.

To help you think about what your design may look like or include, consider some of the key themes that play a critical role in the wellbeing of young people. Social media, sexual health and relationships and substance misuse are just some of the things that young people encounter throughout their teenage years that can have a huge impact on mental wellbeing. The report provides a unique opportunity to both highlight theses important issues but also to convey recommendations to those that can help improve and protect young people’s mental wellbeing in Southwark.

Cllr Evelyn Akoto, cabinet member for community safety and public health said: “This is a great opportunity for our talented young people to flex their creative muscles and have their work printed on the cover of a key council document. Mental wellbeing is a significant issue for young people and plays such an important role in overall wellbeing. I look forward to seeing how the young residents of our borough interpret this complex topic.”
