Southwark students buck the national trend with a great set of A Level results

Students from across Southwark have received their A-Level exam results this week and early indications suggest the borough is celebrating another year of exam success.

This summer the performance of A-Level students nationally fell both at the highest grades and across the board compared to last year. Southwark students and schools however had a clean sweep of success, securing higher percentages of students achieving grades in all the main categories.

Whilst A* to A grades nationally fell by one percentage point compared to last year, Southwark’s results rose to outperform the national average by 1.5 percentage points. The pattern was the same for A* to B grades where Southwark results were 2.3 percentage points above the national average.

The greatest improvement however was for A* to C grades where Southwark students have now consistently been above national average for past three years but this year widened the gap to  4.1 percentage points.

Cllr Jasmine Ali, cabinet member for children, schools and adult care said: “On behalf of Southwark Council, congratulations to everyone who collected exam results last Thursday. Results day can be an incredibly nerve wracking day and everyone should feel incredibly proud of themselves for the work they have put in.

“It is truly fantastic to see that Southwark students and schools have once again outperformed national averages. These results continue to reflect the high standard of teaching and attainment that we are so proud of across the borough. Such a great set of results are testament to the hard work of students, teachers and the support of family.

“Whatever the next step may be, I sincerely hope that all young people in Southwark received the results that help them on their way to achieving what they want out of life.”
