Southwark wins £50K for new Creative Enterprise Zone

Southwark Council has been awarded £50,000 from the Greater London Authority to investigate a Creative Enterprise Zone (CEZ), designed to help build upon the cultural and creative heartlands across the capital.

Southwark’s CEZ, The Peckham to Camberwell Creative Corridor, uses the A202 between Peckham and Camberwell as the artery for the proposed zone. It aims to support Peckham’s diverse, creative community and stimulate further organic growth in the creative industries in Camberwell.

Peckham and Camberwell are areas with huge creative potential. This growing area of Southwark shows the early signs of a Creative Enterprise Zone and is a perfect place to begin the journey.

This grant will help the council to better understand the needs and challenges of existing creative industries and support the development of a creative enterprise consortium. This will galvanise local ambition and aspiration around skills, training, education, and community and work space development, and build a stronger more resilient creative community.

The council will engage with creative businesses, cultural organisations, developers and residents, to deliver a strategic vision and action plan that will support the growth and influence of creative industries across Southwark and London.

Cllr Johnson Situ, Cabinet Member for Business, Culture and Social Regeneration, said: “The CEZ funding is a great boost to the work that we do to promote the creative sector through our Cultural Strategy. It will enable us to further investigate the introduction of more sustainable, affordable and long-term creative work spaces and look into building networks to help local artists to share and grow skills and information. We’re delighted to be shortlisted by the GLA to develop London’s first Creative Enterprise Zone and welcome the funding to take our plans to the next stage."
