Southwark Council has appointed a new Head of External Affairs to lead the council’s communications, policy, public affairs and cabinet support.

Tony Manwaring will join the council on Tuesday 31 May, taking on the new role which was created as part of a restructure that delivered £382,000 savings.

Tony graduated from Cambridge University in 1979 with an MA in Economics, and has worked for a wide range of organisations. Most recently Tony was Executive Director of External Affairs at the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, and prior to that he was Chief Executive of the think tank Tomorrow’s Company and charity Scope.

Cllr Peter John, Leader of Southwark Council, said: “Tony has already achieved great things in his career, and it’s a real coup for us that he has chosen to join Southwark as our Head of External Affairs. He has a huge depth and breadth of experience from different sectors, all of which will really help us challenge how we work. I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Tony Manwaring said: “I’m thrilled to join Southwark Council at such an exciting time for this dynamic borough which is filled with opportunity. I believe there is great potential for us to deliver even more for residents, not only by making sure they are aware of all the fantastic things on their doorstep, but also by championing their cause. I’m looking forward to working with some great people to help tell Southwark’s outstanding story.”
