Southwark Council is offering £500 for events held during LGBT History Month

8 February 2017

For the sixth year running, Southwark’s Lesbian, Gay, Bi and Trans (LGBT) Network is offering small grants for anyone organising events which promote diversity within the community.

The LGBT Network brings together the expertise and efforts of residents across the borough to focus on the main priorities for action within the community.

This year, for the first time, Southwark Council and the Southwark LGBT Network have teamed up with Metro – a leading equality and diversity charity –  to offer support and joint funding.

Anyone can apply if they are planning an event, project or activity in Southwark during LGBT History Month 2017 (this month) and beyond.

The maximum grant is £500 but applicants are encouraged to seek out extra sources of funding to at least match this if possible.

Ideally, events should take place in February 2017, but events later in the year will be considered, particularly events to mark LGBT awareness dates, for example:  London Pride Week, International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, Bi Visibility Day and Intersex Awareness Day.

All events and activities must take place in, or be based in, Southwark. Events in neighbouring boroughs will be considered on a case by case basis.

The projects may benefit LGBT people elsewhere in the UK, but there must be a focus on Southwark and clear benefit to LGBT people living, working, studying or socialising in Southwark, particularly those who have not previously been involved in organised LGBT events. The council cannot support closed social events that do not encourage participation from other groups.

Councillor Barrie Hargrove, cabinet member for communities and the environment, said, “We’re delighted to have Metro on board with our grant scheme this year and I look forward to seeing applications for events and activities which will draw communities together and celebrate Southwark’s diversity.”
