A £35m investment into new community facilities at heart of one of London’s biggest regeneration projects has been approved

In the face of increasing financial pressures, Southwark Council is continuing to invest in brand new community facilities, including a new library, GP surgery, early years’ nursery and community space, on the Aylesbury estate.

Southwark’s Cabinet members gave the go-ahead for the project’s budget of £35m at their meeting on Tuesday 7 February. The majority of the money - £23m - will come from the council’s capital budget and the rest from Section 106 money and contributions from developers Notting Hill Housing.

Cllr Johnson Situ, cabinet member for business, culture and social regeneration, said: “The regeneration of the Aylesbury is about more than new homes. It is also about improving the lives of the people who live on the estate, with better open spaces and community facilities. We face increasing financial challenges, but we believe that this investment and the benefits it will bring makes this the right move for our residents.

“In particular, Southwark is in a unique position in that we have worked hard to keep investing and keeping libraries in place as a vital community space. I am very pleased that we have taken this step forward to deliver yet another brand new and improved library in the heart of one of the biggest regeneration projects in London.”

The new facilities will be built on the old Amersham Site, now referred to as Plot 18, along Thurlow Street, next to the current Aylesbury Medical Centre. The development will contain a new GP and health centre, early years’ facilities, a stay and play service, retail space including a new pharmacy, and a public square, plus around 120 new homes – at least half of which will be a mix of social rent and shared ownership for residents on the Aylesbury estate.

Planning approval was given for the project in December 2016.
