Southwark Council is pleased to announce the designation of two new Local Nature Reserves - Russia Dock Woodland and Stave Hill Ecology Park.

The new designations bring the borough’s total of Local Nature Reserves to seven, including Sydenham Hill Wood, Nunhead Cemetery, Lavender Pond, Dulwich Upper Wood and One Tree Hill.

Cllr Ian Wingfield, cabinet member for environment and public realm, said: “By designating the sites as Local Nature Reserves Southwark Council is committing to managing the area for the benefit of nature conservation and provide people experience of the natural environment."

Both Russia Dock Woodland and Stave Hill Ecology Park were created in the 1980s on the site of the former Surrey Docks. Both sites support an amazing diversity of wildlife including bats, orchids, rare moths and butterflies and many species of bird including breeding kingfishers and sparrow hawks.
