Paving stone laid to remember Southwark war hero

A commemorative paving stone for Bermondsey born Harold Mugford will be laid to mark the 100th anniversary of his Victoria Cross commendation.

The paving stone for Mr Mugford will be unveiled by the Mayor of Southwark, Councillor Kath Whittam, at 11am on Tuesday 11 April at the Bermondsey and Rotherhithe War Memorial, West Lane, Bermondsey SE16.

Local authorities across the country have been invited to participate in a campaign run by the Department for Communities and Local Government to honour all Victoria Cross recipients. Commemoration paving stones will be laid in or as close to the birth place of Victoria Cross recipients on the 100th anniversary to remember the act of valour which led to the award.

Harold Sanford Mugford was born at 149 Keetons Road, Bermondsey, one of three brothers who fought in the First World War. His older brother Richard returned after service but his younger brother Percy died in battle.

Harold was awarded a Victoria Cross for his act of bravery at Monchy-le-Preux, Battle of Arras on 11 April 1917.

The Victoria Cross commemorative paving stones are part of the centenary programme to remember the First World War. The VC paving stones are placed near the birth place of the VC holder and this will be the third to be unveiled in Southwark since 2014.
