120 new affordable homes given green light in Peckham

Planners at Southwark have given the go ahead to the development of 168 new homes in Peckham - including 96 new council homes. Just over 70 per cent of which will be at council or intermediate rent, as part of the council’s commitment to providing affordable housing in the borough.

The project, which is part of the council’s commitment to building 11,000 new council homes, was approved by the council’s planning committee this week.

The work includes the conversion and extension of the council offices at Sumner House to provide 44 flats and four townhouses, plus the building of a new block of 39 flats on Sumner Avenue, a new block of 72 flats on Jocelyn Street and a four storey block with 9 flats on Melon Road.

Of the 168 homes – 120 will be affordable split into 96 homes at council rents and 24 at intermediate rent. The remaining 48 will be for private sale to help pay for the provision of the affordable homes.

The proposal also includes provision of flexible retail space on the ground floor of the property on Melon Road, car parking and landscaping work including a ‘play ruin garden’ along Sumner Road and new tree planting.

Cllr Mark Williams, cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said: “This is a high quality proposal that will provide a large number of much needed new homes, especially genuinely affordable new council homes, in the heart of the place that was recently named the best place to live in London."

The site is part of the council’s Southwark Regeneration in Partnership programme. The council will be working with a selected development organisation to build the homes. These locations are part of a package for Lot B and the council’s chosen developer for these sites is set to be confirmed shortly.
