Falls in Southwark

In England, falls account for half of all accident related hospital admissions amongst older people. Serious falls can result in hip fractures and other debilitating conditions. Falls can also add to complications in other complex health conditions. Research has shown falls in the elderly have previously cost the NHS £2bn annually, with this figure expected to rise significantly in line with an ageing population.

Southwark has seen local investment in this area through an improved offer of Strength and Balance services, Telecare and Reablement pathways. This has resulted in some improvement in rates and outcomes. However, more work is needed to decrease the incidence of falls, and increase the uptake in these services.

Between April and December 2019, Southwark worked with the Health Innovation Network on a discovery phase of work to answer the question “how the prevention and management of falls in Southwark could be improved to reduce the impact on residents and the wider health and social care system”. It looked at different opportunities to maximise the utilisation of data, new technologies to address individual risk factors, and increase in digital training, awareness and navigation between services.
