Right to Buy

If you're a council tenant who'd like to buy your rented home at a discount, our Right to Buy scheme can help. 

Who is eligible

You have the right to buy if:

  • you've been a council tenant for a minimum of 3 years
  • you hold a secure tenancy

Will be based on:

  • how long you’ve been a tenant with a public sector landlord
  • the type of property you’re buying (flat or house)
  • the property's market value

If you’ve completed a total of 6 years public sector tenancy, an additional discount applies. As of 6 April 2018, Southwark tenants applying for the Right to Buy scheme will benefit from an increase to the maximum discount in line with the percentage change in the CPI (consumer Price Index) to £108,000. This new policy is only applicable to applications received after 6 April 2018.

If you live in a flat, the discount will be calculated at 50% between year 3 and 5 of your tenancy.

If you live in a house, the discount is calculated at 35% between year 3 and 5 of your tenancy.
