Lifestyle risk factors
Behavioural risk factors such as tobacco and drug use, alcohol consumption, sexual practices, physical activity and diet have a strong influence on health. Incidence of major health conditions like cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, diabetes and cancer can be delayed or prevented through changes in behaviours.
Southwark has particularly high prevalence of child obesity and high rates of sexually transmitted diseases. In addition, there are significant health inequalities whereby prevalence of obesity, smoking and sedentary lifestyle is higher in residents from more deprived backgrounds.
The following chapters present some of the topics within the Health risks section.
