Lifestyle risk factors
Behavioural risk factors such as tobacco and drug use, alcohol consumption, sexual practices, physical activity and diet have a strong influence on health. Incidence of major health conditions like cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, diabetes and cancer can be delayed or prevented through changes in behaviours.
Southwark has a particularly high prevalence of childhood obesity and high rates of sexually transmitted diseases. In addition, there are significant health inequalities whereby the prevalence of obesity, smoking and a sedentary lifestyle is higher in residents from more deprived backgrounds.
The following chapters present some of the topics within the Health risks section.
