The Homelessness Reduction Act significantly reforms England’s homelessness legislation, ensuring that more people get the help they need earlier to prevent them from becoming homeless in the first place.

This means local authorities need to increase their workforce and support existing staff to deliver the service transformation the Act requires. 

The London Training Academy is funded by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government and will be delivered by Southwark Council, as part of their existing Trailblazer programme.

It will provide a programme of training for over 1,000 staff working in front-line housing options services. This includes approximately 140 apprentices and trainees, 300 new staff without previous homelessness experience and up to 600 existing staff.

The training available and eligibility for each cohort will depend upon the recruitment type and experience of the member of staff. 

Knowledge and skills training is delivered by Shelter, AHAS, Andy Gale, Homeless Link, Tabris Ltd, Solace Women’s Aid and Southwark and apprentices have the opportunity to gain a CIH qualification.

Recognising the particular recruiting challenges faced in London, staff working for London boroughs will be prioritised with unused places made available to authorities in the South East.

The governance and the running of the Academy is overseen by a cross London steering group of local authority representatives.

National Outreach Training Project

Southwark have now embarked on a National Outreach training project in partnership with MHCLG and Homeless Link. The national outreach training is a series of seventeen, three day programmes across London, Bristol, Manchester and Birmingham to deliver training on rough sleeping primarily aimed at boroughs that successfully bid for Rough Sleeping Initiative funding. Feedback for how useful the courses have been at improving officer knowledge of the training subjects is at 80% for very useful and 15% for useful resulting in 95% of delegates rating the training as either useful or very useful.

FAQs

What is a cohort?

There are three training packages available, one for each cohort (pdf, 208kb).

What is a tranche?

Each delegate that has been nominated to undertake all of the training for their cohort will be allocated into a tranche. This is a group of people that will attend all of the same courses at the same time as you. Each tranche is intended to have 20 delegates on.

Which tranche am I on?

I’ve you’ve not received an email yet, you’ve probably not been allocated into a tranche yet, this process is likely to be ongoing throughout 2018 into 2019. I’ve you received an email from us with your training dates, but you’ve misplaced it, contact us on the details below.

Can I attend some of the courses?

As you have been allocated a space, you are expected to attend the training for all the courses for your cohort. If you only go to some of them, you have taken a place that could have been offered to another borough and denied them the full opportunity. Missing the occasional training date for mitigating circumstances is acceptable though.

What training will I be doing?

The eligibility for training cohorts lists all of the training for each cohort. Please note that we are planning for Andy Gale to also provide two days training to cohort A & B, to provide an overview of housing, homelessness and homelessness prevention. HomelessLink will also provide training to all cohorts, focussing on the softer skills required for the HRA and the cultural change this aims to bring to services.

Full venue and arrangement details

Different courses vary, but the general times, including for the five days Homeless Link training is as follows.

Session times will be:

  • 9.45am to start 10am (10.30am start on Wednesdays if training taking place at Southwark Homesearch Centre in Peckham Rye)
  • 2 breaks during the day, times to be decide by trainers
  • 45 minutes for lunch with the option to go down to half an hour if delegates prefer
  • 4pm finish (delegates to be told but will go on until 4.30pm for informal questions or discussions)

You should know the address of the venue for the training as it will have been emailed to you when your training dates were confirmed in an email. If you’ve not had this yet, you’ve probably not yet been allocated to the next few tranches.
