In 2022 Southwark Council awarded seven I Create… grants to local artists, with the aim of helping address the under-representation of people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds in areas of the arts in Southwark. Developed as part of Southwark Stands Together, Southwark Council’s commitment to tackling racial inequality, the grants programme was aimed at artists with specific creative ideas that were ready for development and who would benefit from a period of focused mentoring in order to progress their practice.

The grant programme focused on six disciplines. In addition to the grant funding, artists were paired with a creative mentor from a Southwark-based partner organisation specialising in the artist’s chosen discipline.
