The creative industries are one of the fastest growing sectors and Southwark has a lot to offer. In addition to the Globe, The Tate and other iconic Southwark based platforms, there are growing local creative business centres, including Bussey Building, Theatre Peckham and Peckham Levels. The council wants to continue to support this sector.
Outdoor events form an integral part of Southwark’s Cultural Strategy and currently over 160 events take place within the borough every year. The council support and fund many of these free community events and wish to retain this programme, but it's becoming more and more challenging to do so in the current financial environment.
Discussions around continued support of free events started back in June 2016 at the Friends Conference and several options have been explored. One area which was considered was a more diverse use of outdoor spaces to include a commercial and major events programme. The council will always be committed to a careful and considered approach to how this will be achieved; they want major events to have local benefits, offering an opportunity for local traders to participate, provide work experience, volunteering, training and reduced or discounted tickets for residents.
The processes and responsibilities involved in bringing a large commercial event to Southwark are set out in this process map (pdf, 15kb).
Commercial or major events are planned for the venues below:
