Celebrate with a street party!

On 6 February, Her Majesty The Queen became the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years of service to the people of the United Kingdom.

To celebrate this unprecedented anniversary, residents are invited to plan community street parties or events over the four day UK bank holiday weekend from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 June.

Street parties offer a simple way to celebrate, connect with your neighbours, and feel part of your community.

If you wish to hold a street party on the 2/3/4 or 5 June 2022, then you will need to submit your application to us by midnight on Monday 21 March 2022.

Please note, that we cannot accept any applications after this date due to the planning and preparation times we require, so please make sure you submit your application in good time.

The council is not asking residents to pay application or hire fees. We will provide street barriers for the organisers to install and remove on the approved day.

Please note, that while the council will approve as many applications as possible, there will be situations where we are unable to do so. Please read on to understand the approval process.

Conditions of getting your application approved:

  1. Submit your application and a copy of your resident consultation letter by midnight on Monday 7 March 2022
  2. There must be agreement to hold the street party by three different people (street party organisers). All organisers should be over the age of 18 years of age and all should be residents of the street, which is hosting the party.
  3. The three organisers cannot live at the same address
  4. You MUST consult with all residents who live on the street - this should be by way of a letter and the letter must provide details of the date and time of the street party and have contact details for whichever organiser is going to be available to deal with enquiries or issues on the day. We have provided a template for the letter below
  5. At least one of the organisers must be present at the street party at all times
  6. A street party is NOT a ‘public’ event and should only be advertised to residents of the street in question
  7. Street parties must NOT go on after the hours of dusk; Sunset times for London will range between 21:09hrs and 21:12hrs from the 2 – 5 June
  8. Applications will be processed on a first come, first served basis
  9. Street parties require road closures and certain applications may not be approved, due to their impact on the road network – Southwark has a duty to keep the road network as free flowing and as safe as possible.
  10. The council will notify you in writing to confirm whether or not your application is successful
  11. Any decision taken by the council is final

Organisers' responsibilities:

  1. A formal risk assessment is not required, but you are advised to consider what  could go wrong at your street party and plan accordingly; some  key things to consider are: fire, inclement weather, use of electricity or generators and vehicle movement within the area of your road closure
  2. Road closure barriers will be provided by the Council’s contractor, FM Conway (subject to availability) during the week before your street party
  3. Organisers are responsible for putting these into place at the agreed road closure time
  4. A clear route (minimum 4 metres wide) must be in place along the entire length of the road for emergency vehicle access
  5. Any fire hydrants and/or indicator signage must not be covered or obstructed in any way
  6. The barriers must be ‘staffed’ at all times when they are in place. This should be done by a responsible person over the age of 18 who is physically able to move the barriers if required
  7. Residents or businesses may need to use their vehicles whilst the street is closed – how you manage this should be included in your street party planning
  8. Bunting and any similar decoration should be fixed so that it can be removed without marking or damaging street furniture; bunting must be at least 4.6 metres above the ground if hung across the road. You MUST not pin or hang anything from trees
  9. Noise and disruption to residents who are not attending the street party MUST be kept to a minimum - organisers are responsible for monitoring noise levels throughout the course of the day. Any issues arising from nuisance or anti-social behaviour can be dealt with by the police and/or the council’s enforcement team
  10. Organisers are responsible for clearing up all litter and removing all equipment and furniture when the street party has finished. The Council advocates that organisers recycle and reuse their waste and event items where possible
  11. Organisers are responsible for removing the barriers to reopen the road at the agreed time; barriers will be collected from the delivery address within 5 working days

Your personal information will only be used for the purpose of administering your application and will be destroyed after 1 year.
