"Persecuted, harassed, distorted, undermined, misrepresented…it was a political act that did more to damage democracy in Britain than any other bi-election coverage I ever have come across” Tony Benn, 1983. This film made by the BBC’s Community Programme Unit in 1983. The Unit was set up in the 1972 and commissioned to make a series of programmes called Open Door (later renamed Open Space) which brought awareness to views or issues that were misrepresented. This film examines the events leading up to the Bermondsey Bi-election of February 1983. Starting with the refusals of Michael Foot MP and the NEC to endorse Peter Tatchell as candidate for Bermondsey, the programme goes on to explain how this rejection initiated a campaign of victimisation, homophobia and harassment towards Peter Tatchell by the British press. This treatment saw him receive over 30 death threats, several attempts to run him over in the street and receive bullets in his post. The film is followed by a studio debate featuring Peter Tatchell, the former political editor of The Sun, Walter Terry and Martin Linton from The Guardian.
