The London Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ)

From 25 October 2021, ULEZ is expanding from central London to create a single larger zone up to, but not including, the North Circular Road (A406) and South Circular Road (A205). We support this and the Mayor of London’s efforts to clean up London’s air and improve health and quality of life, for everyone in Southwark.

The ULEZ operates 24 hours a day, every day of the year, except Christmas Day

Vehicles driven inside the ULEZ area must be manufactured to modern exhaust emission standards, or pay the daily charge of £12.50, in addition to any congestion charge. To check if your vehicle meets the ULEZ standards, visit the GLA website which has an online vehicle registration number checker that will tell you if your vehicle complies.

The ULEZ charge will apply for driving a non-compliant vehicle in the zone even if the journey does not cross the boundary. There are cameras within the zone as well as on the boundary to ensure that it is fairly enforced.

In order to maintain the pollution-reducing benefits of the scheme, discounts and exemptions are limited to the following vehicle types:

  • military vehicles
  • specialist vehicles designed and built for mainly off-road use, such as tractors, mobile cranes, etc. (however these may be subject to other restrictions such as the “non-road mobile machinery low emission zone” for construction sites)
  • historic tax class vehicles
  • vehicles constructed prior to 1 January 1973
  • showman’s vehicles
  • taxis licensed with TfL (however, all new taxis must now be zero-emission capable and the age limit for the most polluting taxis is being reduced)

The London Mayor is expanding the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) across all London boroughs from 29 August 2023, to help clear London's air and improve public health.

In order to help make the move to a ULEZ compliant vehicle, The Mayor of London has a scrappage scheme to help scrap older, more polluting vehicles.  Check to see if there is an option that is available for you.
