Giraffe House demolition
Learn about our decision to demolish Giraffe House and our future plans for the site's use.
Why Giraffe House will be demolished
We looked at refurbishment, but it isn’t feasible because of the following reasons:
Accessibility
To make the building accessible for people with disabilities, it would require several lifts to floors at different levels. Not only will this use up valuable space in the building, but the council does not have the money to maintain so many lifts and keep them in good working order.
Removing asbestos
Surveys found asbestos contained within the fabric of the building and although it is safe unless disturbed, we are keen to ensure none of our buildings contain asbestos.
Passing electrical safety tests
To pass an electrical safety test, the Giraffe House would require complete re-wiring, which is not good value for money, considering the other issues with the building.
