Tackling fraud

All Council Tax single person discounts to be checked

As part of an anti-fraud initiative, we're currently checking all discounts awarded to single occupiers of homes within Southwark. This is to make sure that people are paying the right amount of Council Tax.

We're working with Experian the credit reference agency, using up-to-the-minute data matching technology to identify where people are claiming discounts that they aren’t entitled to.

You may be charged a penalty of £70 if you haven’t told us that your circumstances have changed. If you don’t live alone, you may also be prosecuted and will have to pay back the discount that was wrongly awarded.

We also do regular data matching and take part in the National Fraud Initiative (NFI), a UK data matching exercise overseen by the government that matches electronic data from public and private sector bodies to prevent and detect fraud.

We’re required by law to take part in the NFI exercise. This means we may use the information you’ve provided, and also share this with the Cabinet Office NFI and credit reference agencies, to prevent and detect fraud.

We have a legal requirement under the Data Protection Act 2018 and other legislation, to keep your information safe and secure. We won’t share your information with anyone else without your consent, unless it's lawful to do so. For more information about how we use your personal data, please read our data privacy notice.

To report any other type of fraud, contact 0800 052 1010 or email fraud.hotline@southwark.gov.uk.

If you've received NFI review correspondence from us requesting more information please use our NFI review form to provide the information.
