£150 Council Tax Rebate
The government has asked councils to make one-off payments of £150 to eligible households between April and September 2022.
We’ll provide that help to any Southwark household that pays Council Tax in a property banded A, B, C, or D and was living at that property on 1 April 2022.
Your Council Tax band is shown on your bill or you can check your Council Tax band online.
These payments are sometimes called Energy Bill Rebates and don’t need to be repaid. Only one payment per property will be made.
When Will Rebates Be Paid?
If you live in Southwark, in a property banded A, B, C, or D and you paid your Council Tax by Direct Debit from a bank account in your name on or before 1 April 2022
You don't need to do anything to get your rebate. We’ll start making payments from Friday 8th April. £150 will be paid into the same account you use to pay your Council Tax by Direct Debit. When the payment is made, you will see a line in your bank statement that includes Southwark Council, a reference number, and the amount of the payment.
The cut-off date for customers to receive the Council Tax Rebate payment into their account will only apply to customers who set up their Direct Debit payment before 1 April 2022 and had their April Direct Debit taken from their account. If you've not had your April Direct Debit taken from your account, please refer to the section below.
We expect to pay all eligible households who pay council tax by direct debit in line with the above criteria by the end of May. We expect our phone lines to be very busy so please avoid contacting us.
If you live in a property banded A to D but don’t pay Council Tax by Direct Debit or someone else pays your Council Tax

If you live in a property banded E to H for Council Tax and have a low income, or you don’t pay Council Tax for your home
The government has given us some extra funding, called the Energy Rebate Discretionary Fund. We’ll decide who is eligible for support and will publish full details in the spring. You don’t need to do anything now. Discretionary energy rebates may be paid to eligible households up to the end of November this year.
FRAUD ALERT – BOGUS CALLERS
Fraudsters are calling residents and asking for bank details to receive the council tax rebate. The council will not call you to ask for these details - we will start contacting residents by letter or email later this month.
Read government guidance on the Energy Bill Rebate scheme (sometimes called the Council Tax Rebate scheme).
