Retirement pension

10 Year Guarantee (if you retired with service after 1 April 2008)

The pension is guaranteed for ten years, which means that if you were to die within ten years of retirement, a death grant will be payable.

For example, if you were to die after three years on pension, a further seven years' pension would be payable as a lump sum. No death grant can be paid, under any circumstances, if you are over age 75 when you die. The council will decide who to pay any death grant to, but we will take your wishes into account. To help us to do this, you can fill in a form where you can nominate who you want the benefit to be paid to. If you have not previously completed a nomination form, or wish to revise your nomination, please contact the pensions section who will arrange for a form to be sent to you.
