Early payment of preserved benefits

You may apply to receive early payment of your preserved benefits if:

  • you are over the age of 60 or
  • you are over 50 with the council's discretion or
  • on the grounds of ill health

Over 60

If you have not reached your normal retirement date by the age of 60 you may still elect to receive payment of your preserved benefits. However, there will be a reduction to your benefits due to this early payment.

This option does not require employer's consent and will be processed as soon as your written request is received.

Over 50

You may apply for early payment of your preserved benefits once you have attained the age of 50 on compassionate or financial hardship grounds. The council will have to give their consent and will have the discretion to determine if any reductions to the benefits will apply.

You may apply for early payment on these grounds by writing to the pensions office explaining your situation and reasons and waiting for the decision of the council.

Ill health

Your preserved benefits may be put into payment early on the grounds of ill health at any age. You may apply by writing to the pensions office explaining your situation. When your letter is received, forms will be sent for you to complete.

We will liaise with your doctor and you will be asked to cooperate with the council's occupational health
