Cabinet Member for a Safer, Cleaner Borough

Councillor Darren Merrill will deliver a safer Southwark, tackling anti-social behaviour and violent crime by working with the police, community safety partners and with the Safeguarding Adults Board.

Councillor Merrill will keep Southwark clean, leading on waste management, increasing recycling and reducing waste to landfill. He will also drive forward the council’s crucial work support tenants in the private rented sector, tackling empty homes and supporting the renters union.

Councillor Merrill has particular responsibility for:

  • Reducing crime and anti-social behaviour
  • Licensing, Trading Standards, Environmental Health and gambling
  • Private rented housing, including licencing and the renters union
  • Empty homes and absentee landlords
  • Short term-lets
  • Street cleaning, fly-tipping and graffiti
  • Estate cleaning and grounds maintenance (working with the Cabinet Member for Council Housing)
  • Waste collection, recycling and ending single-use plastics
  • Pest control
  • Noise nuisance
  • Community wardens
  • CCTV and other safety measures in public places
  • Public spaces protection orders (PSPOs)
  • Relationship with the police
  • Strengthening community relations with the police and promoting equitable policing
  • Preventing radicalisation and extremism
