Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Children, Young People & Education

To deputise for the Leader of the Council in his absence by representing the borough at external events, within the council and when necessary chairing cabinet.

To safeguard children in Southwark and lead policies to support them. To assume the statutory role of lead member for children’s services in accordance with the guidance produced by the Department for Education (DfE), including responsibility for children's social care and early years, the inclusion agenda, and work to implement the children and young people's plan. The portfolio holder will hold political accountability and exercise leadership over all areas included in DfE guidance. To lead our work with academies and other education providers to improve standards in every school in the borough so that no child is left behind.

To lead the council’s work on young people including young people’s mental health, youth services and play.

The cabinet member will have particular responsibility for:

  • Working with the Leader of the Council to support the political and strategic leadership of the council
  • Play (working with the Cabinet Member for Environment, Leisure and Roads) 
  • Early years’ services & children and family centres
  • Child care
  • Schools & nurseries
  • Further, adult and higher education, including the Council’s Adult Education Service
  • Scholarships
  • Reducing school exclusions 
  • Promoting the teaching of black history in schools
  • Developing a Southwark standard for professional development and teacher induction
  • Special Education Needs
  • Children’s social care
  • Corporate parenting and care leavers
  • Fostering and adoption
  • Child & adolescent mental health (working with the Cabinet Member for Public Health & Community Safety)
  • School nursing and health visiting
  • Free healthy school and nursery meals and fruit
  • Young people and youth services, including the young advisors
  • Youth offending services
  • Relationship with Southwark College
