Councillor Jasmine Ali

Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Education

Cllr Ali will deputise for the Leader of the Council in his absence by representing the borough at external events, within the council and chairing Cabinet. She will safeguard children in Southwark and lead policies to support them, including children's social care and early years, the school inclusion agenda. She leads our work with academies and other education providers to improve standards in every school in the borough so that no child is left behind. Additionally, Cllr Ali leads the council’s work on young people including young people’s mental health, youth services and play.

Cllr Ali will be responsible for delivering our commitment to:

  • guarantee mental health support for all Southwark children and young people
  • put our new Southwark Youth Parliament in the driving seat
  • support new families, ensuring you have a family centre close to where you live 
  • launch a new sure-start for teenagers service
  • local high quality playgrounds, including play equipment for children with disabilities  
  • keep school standards high 
  • launch a School Inclusion Charter to prevent permanent exclusions and end off-rolling.
  • launch ‘Let's Go Zero’ schools network
  • create a ‘We Are Southwark’ curriculum

Cllr Ali will have wider responsibility for:

  • play
  • early years’ services, health visiting and children and family centres
  • childcare
  • schools, nurseries and special education needs 
  • free healthy school and nursery meals and fruit
  • children’s social care, corporate parenting and care leavers
  • fostering and adoption
  • unaccompanied asylum seeking children
  • young people and youth services
  • youth offending services
  • further, higher and adult education
  • relationship with Southwark College
