Family Link - short break service for disabled children

Support and training

All Family Link carers receive a high level of support and training from a dedicated team of specialist social workers and health and educational experts.

During assessment, our prospective carers are required to attend two days of preparation training. This covers an overview of the following areas:

  • disability awareness
  • child development
  • health & safety
  • carers experience of Family Link
  • managing behaviour
  • support for Carers
  • culture
  • children's needs 
  • parent's experience of Family Link
  • safeguarding & confidentiality
  • importance of play

Once approved, the support our Family Link carers receive includes:

  • advice and guidance from Family Link.
  • a financial allowance
  • ongoing support
  • equipment necessary to care for the child

Our ongoing training programme includes:

  • working with children with autism
  • communication
  • First Aid
  • realistic Moving and Handling
  • managing behaviour
  • safeguarding
  • makaton training
  • safer caring
  • epilepsy and administration of medication
  • any relevant training required to meet the specific needs of the child you're linked with
