Children's services inspections

This page provides information on major inspections that Southwark Council children’s services will be subject to over the next few years. It also includes information on previous inspections.

Inspecting local authority children’s services (ILACS) framework

In 2018 Ofsted starting using the following framework and guidance for most inspections of local authority children’s services (ILACS).

Focused visit to Southwark local authority children’s services

In January 2019, Ofsted visited our children’s services. Inspectors looked at our arrangements for children in care, including disabled children. They looked at a range of evidence, including case discussions with social workers and managers. They also looked at local authority performance management, quality assurance information and children’s case records. In addition, they evaluated the effectiveness of supervision and support for social work staff. You can read their findings here

Local area SEND Inspection Framework

Ofsted and Care Quality Commission (CQC) jointly inspect local areas to see how well they fulfil their responsibilities for children and young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities.

Joint Targeted Area Inspections (JTAI)

It's recognised that no agency can deliver an effective child protection response by itself. Joint working is needed at both a strategic level and at a practice level, to respond effectively to children’s needs. Ofsted, the police, health and probation inspectorates work together to look at how well local authorities and other local agencies work together in an area to protect children. Each set of inspections focuses on a different ‘deep dive’ such as the neglect of older children, and domestic abuse.
