Car Trade Award Scheme

To address public concerns with standards in the motor trade, we've set up a local car trade registration scheme. We've consultated with local car traders and the Retail Motor Industry Federation.

The scheme sets minimum standards of service which consumers can expect to receive when dealing with traders registered with the scheme.

Traders who register with this award scheme should:

  • comply with the spirit, as well as the letter of the law
  • operate a staff training policy
  • comply with the scheme's customer complaints procedure

The scheme covers all major areas of the car trade and includes:

  • used vehicle sales
  • servicing
  • body repairs
  • child car seat fitting assistance

Inclusion of a trader on this register is only an indication they've made a commitment to meet certain minimum standards, which have been set out in our code of practice.

Inclusion on the register doesn't mean that the council in any way guarantees or accepts responsibility for any work undertaken by a trader, or agreements made by customer with a trader.

In every instance, the decision to appoint a trader is the responsibility of the customer. Although the traders on this register have undergone a strict vetting procedure, we're unable to recommend any traders.

As of 2017, the scheme is closed to new members but the current scheme will continue to be maintained.
