Throughout our High Street Challenge, we funded a large variety of great projects and initiatives within Southwark’s High Streets. We’ve listed them below.

A pilot legal advice project for businesses in Southwark.

Albion Street Steering Group

Three Scandinavian-themed weekend markets will draw attention to Albion Street and its potential, further community integration, help promote social cohesion, and celebrate cultural heritage

Albion Street Steering Group (ASSG)

Destination Albion
Albion Street Steering Group plans to nurture and further develop the current successful initiatives in Albion Street, in partnership with local businesses, schools and Scandinavian Cultural centres until the derelict sites are redeveloped. Celebrating Albion Street as a destination will help foster community well being and cohesion and contribute to the long-term reputation and viability of the strategically positioned street. Destination Albion will also endorse a sense of place and make the commercial units an attractive proposition for future occupation.

Bankside Open Spaces Trust (BOST)

Bankside Open Spaces Trust presents The Great Get Together Bankside 2019
The Great Get Together Bankside is a community festival which is free to attend, for all ages. Across Union Street, we host a day of music and performances on 3 stages, with a dog show, bake-off, games, food and fun events for all of the community. The event is organised with the support of local businesses and residents.

Better Bankside

Borough High Street: Inns and Yards - transforming the public realm of a historic yard off Borough High Street. A demonstration project that will seek to make the case to attract future funding from other sources for expansion to other inn/yards

Bermondsey Community Kitchen

Developing a market identity and strategy with the local community, alongside this running a project helping young people to run food stalls in the market.

Blue Bermondsey BID

To work in partnership with Pexmas and Gourmandizing to encourage increased footfall and engagement on Southwark Park Road through the refurbishment of the John Bull Arch.

Blue Bermondsey BID

Blue Bermondsey Community events
Building on the success of their previous High Street Challenge project, Blue Bermondsey BID presents a programme of events which will include Musicity and the Bermondsey Carnival Bicycle Parade, supported by occasional guest and craft markets at the Blue Market.

Camberwell Arts

Art installation in shop fronts as part of the Camberwell Festival 2016

Camberwell Festival

Funding for summer 2016 Burgess Park event; encouraging local businesses and start-ups to get involved with the event and drawing more footfall to the high streets and town centres surrounding Burgess Park.

Camberwell Fair

A free entry music festival and market on Camberwell Green planned to take place on 31 August 2019, with 40 local traders, 20 volunteers and a minimum of 3,500 attendees from the local community. The project includes an Enterprise Training Scheme which will provide support local entrepreneurs; including two training events, a competition, mentoring, free trading opportunities and financial support.

Carnaval Del Pueblo Association

To deliver an entrepreneurial start-up programme in vacant East Street shops and bring new traders and customers to the area through a series of ‘Plaza Latina’ Latin American markets.

Copeland Park

To research and evaluate options for an improved system of waste collection and the recycling of trade waste from businesses in Peckham Town Centre.

Creation Trust

The In-Stall Project will make use of 10 long-term empty stall spaces in East Street by recruiting participants who will introduce new products, market stall uses, and activities. The project will equip them to trade on a more permanent basis beyond the life of the project.

Creation Trust

Training and equipping local residents to visit a variety of Southwark's high streets and town centres and record VLOGs on key businesses and high street activity.

Druid Street traders

To support retail growth on Druid Street through the creation of a bustling weekend market and e-commerce platform.

East Dulwich Traders

Creating a locally owned brand for East Dulwich by installing 35 lamp post banners and a map of the local area. This activity hopes to promote the North Cross Rd market extension (results of market extension consultation due in February 2017).

Fantasy High Streets

Arts and business projects in Nunhead and East Dulwich to support the transformation of the local high streets on Evelina Road, Nunhead Green and Lordship Lane through tailor-made events and activities. 

 

Design and installation of micro-manufactured shop signage in conjunction with South London Makerspace.

Hatch Enterprise

It’s Your Business
'It’s Your Business' is a 12-month project, aiming to impact 200 local ventures and 2,000 residents in and around East Street through events, enterprise programmes, pop-ups and marketing campaigns to bring East Street Market online and share the amazing diversity and stories.  

Hotel Elephant

Hotel Elephant will drive footfall to the Elephant & Castle and North Walworth through the promotion of a new creative sector-specific location (Spare Street) on the Low Line.

Incredible Edible Southwark

An incubator for locally run food cooperatives in Peckham which will connect local producers and consumers and offer employment support. 

Latin Elephant

This project aims to encourage participation of Latin American retailers in the regeneration programme for Elephant and Castle through expanding its activities which will include a scoping workshop, feasibility study, one-day conference and short documentary.

Latin Elephant

Engagement activities to support migrant and ethnic businesses in Elephant and Castle. Delivery of specialist workshops, surgeries, creation of databases and internal training. At least 25 businesses to benefit from the support.

London College of Communication

‘Shop Front’ is a pop-up design studio in the Elephant and Castle shopping centre, run by LCC, offering design advice and support to local traders, and providing on-the-spot design solutions to enhance their shop fronts and window displays and promote their businesses.

Walworth eats: The Walworth Road food map
From Spring 2019, students and graduates from London College of Communication (LCC) have worked to deliver a creative programme of digital marketing support targeted towards independent food outlets based on and around Walworth Road, with a focus on healthy eating and diverse food shops, restaurants and cafes. London Larder Markets

Scoping the interest and feasibility of extending Druid Street Market.

Love West Dulwich

Creating a sense of identity for the West Dulwich area that will help promote the local high street to residents. Bringing residents and businesses together to design lamp post banners in the shopping parade areas of West Dulwich.

Mountview

Peckham is Open
A programme of events under the heading ‘Peckham is Open’ aimed to support trade and continued footfall on Rye Lane during the SGN gas main works and to promote Peckham as a retail and cultural destination. The project will establish partnership working amongst local businesses and organisations and encourage community participation and events designed with and for local businesses.
Additional business support will also be commissioned in Peckham to help small businesses navigate the compensation process and raise their concerns.

Old Kent Road Connection

The aim of this project is to establish a new Community Interest Company for the high street and organise a week-long community event.

Pansophia

Developing a Peckham Traders Network, this delivers a business-led program of capacity-building training and business reviews targeted at small retailers/ traders located in Peckham town centre.

Peabody

Development of an enterprise hub on East Street in conjunction with Carnaval Del Pueblo Association and CoolTan Arts.

Pecan

Peckham Trader's Training will improve the quality of customer service in Peckham through conducting research and delivering workshops to reduce traders infringing the law. 

Peckham Town Team/The Means

A range of public events emanating from the pop-up space on 91 Peckham High Street aimed at increasing footfall.

Pexmas

Food and cultural festival to last for one weekend in Peckham. The festival will serve as a vehicle to bring together a significant number of retail, food service and creative businesses and organisations in the town centre to inject vitality and inspiration into our high streets.

Reprezent

A ‘Pop-Up’ London-wide FM radio station which will serve as an informal business improvement network for Nunhead, whilst also training local young people to make radio programmes promoting their local area and its businesses.

SE5 Forum

To work with local businesses to carry out a feasibility study into setting up a Business Improvement District for Camberwell.

Three Cs Support

Project aims to transform the current Crossways Mental Health Centre on Rye Lane into a sustainable enterprise and community resource that will attract an increased number of visitors to Rye Lane.

Time & Talents

Creating a thriving community hub in partnership with local businesses, in a large vacant retail unit located at the main entrance to Surrey Quays Shopping Centre.

Time & Talents

T&T2 Inclusive High Street Community events
Health Awareness and Cultural Celebration Time & Talents will bring community events into Surrey Quays shopping centre. Themed, fun events will focus on key local health priorities. In addition, business workshops and smaller-scale monthly events will encourage the celebration of diversity and inclusivity, bringing together people from all backgrounds within the local community.

Tower Bridge Road Alliance

Improvements to Tower Bridge Road for residents, businesses and visitors through the delivery of a Christmas Fayre and art project.

Walworth Society

Providing walking tours of the Walworth area aiming to educate participants about the past, present and future of the area and drawing greater footfall to the diverse high street. Round 5 project - Walworth Festival in June 2017 - cultural and historical events over the four weekends in June. Aiming to highlight Walworth as a shopping and leisure destination.

Walworth Town Team

Series of promotional events and activities to last until 2016 aimed at increasing footfall for local businesses.

Wormfood Music Ltd and Continental Drifts

A one-day market and festival on Camberwell Green which will support local businesses by linking ticket sales to spend in high street shops and providing creative marketing support for pop-up stalls at the festival.
