BID levy and funding

Below is our guide for all you’ll need to know about a Business Improvement District’s ballot and the levy imposed upon a successful vote. If you’d like more information, check out the British BIDs website.

BID Levy

The BID levy is a small percentage of a businesses’ rateable value. The levy is collected on top of the existing Business Rates bill. BIDs can choose to exempt certain businesses from paying the levy, however, these businesses can not then vote in the BID ballot. Many BIDs exempt the smallest businesses and some exempt certain business sectors.

If a BID ballot is successful all eligible businesses are required to pay the BID levy.

BID Funding

A BID is funded through the raising of a BID levy. The BID levy is then used to fund the various programmes, projects and schemes operated by the BID.

BIDs are considered an attractive option for many grant-making bodies and as a result, often receive multiple grants throughout their term. Local authorities, property owners and businesses outside the BID area can all provide additional income
