Stay safe when using public wifi

There are many ways you can protect your information when you're using public wifi:

  • know who is providing the service
  • read the policies and information provided
  • don’t access your personal or financial information
  • don’t stay permanently signed into accounts
  • when you’ve finished using an account, log out
  • don’t use the same password on different websites

About encrypted websites

 An encrypted website is one where the web address, (URL) starts with https. To be secure: 

  • Each site you visit should be encrypted.
  • Your entire visit to each site should be encrypted from the time you log in to the site until you log out.
  • Log in or send personal information only to websites you know are fully encrypted.
  • If you think you’re logged in to an encrypted site but find yourself on an unencrypted page, log out immediately.

Password security

 A strong password is:

  • unique and complex
  • at least 15 characters long
  • mixing letters, numbers and special characters

Pay attention to warnings. Many web browsers alert you before you visit a scam website or download malicious programs. Don’t ignore those warnings. Also, keep your browser and security software up to date.

Browser add-ons or plug-ins 

Installing browser add-ons or plug-ins can help to keep you secure, but they still don’t protect you on all websites. 

Software updates

 Internet security software cannot protect against every threat, but it will detect and remove most malware.  They provide a vital layer of security. You should make sure it's up-to-date. This includes:

  • antivirus
  • antimalware
  • ad blockers
  • operating systems
  • applications
