Register an animal feed business

Businesses that make, use, or supply animal feed must register.

You must register your business premises with our trading standards team if it supplies, uses or handles animal feed. This includes:

  • food premises that supply waste food for animal feed
  • breweries that supply spent grains for animal feed

Registration is free.

You must not operate without being registered and/or approved. This applies to:

  • all animal feed production businesses
  • all pet food manufacturers
  • all sizes of business, from small scale home producers to large factories

Products of animal origin

You must also get approval from the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) if you manufacture pet food that contains products of animal origin, like:

  • eggs
  • meat
  • milk
  • butter
  • honey

This applies even you’re a small scale home producer using animal origin products considered fit for human consumption.

Exemptions

You do not need to register your premises for some activities, such as:

  • selling pet food in a retail setting
  • making feed at home for animals that are either kept for personal use or not for food production
  • feeding animals that are kept for personal use and are food-producing
  • feeding animals that are not kept for food production
  • selling small amounts of unprocessed farm products directly to the end consumer
  • supplying small amounts of unprocessed farm products to local shops that supply the end consumer (excludes spent grains from breweries)
  • supplying small amounts of unprocessed agricultural products for use on local farms
