Registering a building for worship and marriage
If a specific building is used for worship, you can register it as a place of worship and it will:
- receive a certificate of registration
- be added to the Registrar General’s List

A minister, proprietor or trustee at the place of worship should visit the register office with the following:
- two completed copies of Form 76
- a drawing of the floor plan showing the rooms used for worship
- an average weekly timetable of the building
- £28 fee

If a building is already registered as a place of worship, you can complete Form 78 to register it as a place for marriage.
A minister, proprietor or trustee at the place of worship should visit the register office with the following:
- one completed Form 78
- £120 fee

You also have the option to register your building for worship and marriage at the same time. You'll need to complete both forms (Form 76 and Form 78) and pay both fees.
Registering a place of worship for disuse
You can register a building for disuse if:
- the building is no longer used for worship
- you're moving to a different building

Who can authorise a marriage
A registrar attends ceremonies for one year after a building is registered.
You can then apply for a member of your congregation to become an ‘authorised person’ for marriage.
